The Dutch defender is yet to agree a new contract and he has addressed his future after their 2-0 win over Brentford.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed doubts over his future at the club after refusing to secure a new contract. Van Dijk has been at the Reds since his £75m move from Southampton in January 2018. The Dutch midfielder is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Premier League history after playing a key role in his country’s 2019-20 triumph under Jurgen Klopp. But the 32-year-old’s future is uncertain following Klopp’s departure in June, with his current deal due to expire in 10 months’ time and Van Dijk free to negotiate with clubs on a free transfer from January 1 onwards.
When asked about the subject and in the post-match discussion following their 2-0 win over Brentford, Van Dijk remained tight-lipped about his contract negotiations with the club but insisted he was “very calm” on the matter. “I’m very calm. “I want to play the best season possible,” Van Dijk said. “I want to stay relevant this year. Whatever happens next year, we’ll see. Everything happens for a reason. My situation hasn’t changed at all but I’m very calm about it. “I have no reason to think about anything else because I have the whole season to play and I hope we can succeed.”
Slot has yet to sign a new contract this summer, instead working with the tools he has at his disposal. Van Dijk has vowed to help his new manager in any way he can, starting with moving on from the Klopp era. “We have to… I wouldn’t say forget about Jurgen’s era, but it’s over and we had a lot of fun and now it’s time for the new coach to succeed,” he added.
