Liverpool fans reckon they’ve narrowed it down to three potential midfielders after it was revealed the Reds are close to bringing in a mystery signing.
Liverpool are said to be close to completing a first contract in the summer transfer window. Arne Slott’s side will open their Premier League campaign on August 17 against newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road, and there have been some fans concerned about the lack of activity on the transfer front. So far this summer, the Reds have been linked with a number of targets, but nothing concrete yet. But all that could change in the coming days.
The Athletic report that Liverpool are “chasing” the No. 1.6 specialist outside the Premier League, adding that it is a situation to be wary of this week. They also claim that the Reds rejected offers for Wataru Endo this summer, simply because they do not want to lose a player in a position where they currently lack depth. Adding a new defensive midfielder could see the Japan international leave Anfield if Liverpool receive a suitable offer for Endo.
It is still unclear who the midfielder will be, but Reds fans on social media believe they have narrowed down the field to three targets. They believe the Red Devils are ready to sign Alan Varela from Porto, Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad or Ederson from Atalanta. “I want Zubimendi, Ederson or Varela, but I have a feeling I will be disappointed,” one fan wrote on X. Another added: “Don’t be surprised if Alan Varela is the one we decide to buy. Zubimendi is clearly the dream.”
A third commented: “Zubimendi has the hype, but Varela could bring new energy to the team.” A fourth said: “Martin Zubimendi seems to be everyone’s first choice, but I would be happier if Alan Varela became a Liverpool player this summer.”
A fifth wrote: “Ederson has been excellent in the Europa League, stop using cup competitions to judge a player, look at them in the league too.”
Liverpool.com says: It will be interesting to see if one of these three options is the enigmatic defensive midfielder Liverpool are looking to sign ahead of the Premier League season. While Ederson and Varela could be options, Martin Zubimendi seems unlikely to be sold with Real Sociedad set to lose Mikel Merino this summer due to a year remaining on his current contract. Zubimendi played a key role in helping Spain win glory this summer when he replaced Rodri at half-time against England in the Euro 2024 final, and would be an impressive signing as the mystery player Liverpool are interested in.
